When it comes to sustainability Vattenfall has a problematic reputation, which overshadows the massive investments the company does on solar energy, amongst other innovative sustainable projects. As Vattenfall is one of Europes largest energy providers, their work with sustainable transformation has a huge positive impact. Since we are both pragmatic and care about the environment, we definitely wanted to work with this project.
Together with the advertising agency NORD DDB we developed the concept and idea for “Vattenfall Hackathon”. The idea was to, through action, prove that Vattenfall want to do well for the climate and simultaneously engage in dialogue with people who shares an understanding of the potential of Vattenfalls' work with sustainability. By letting the musician and engineer Lilla Namo become ambassador we could create (at the time) Sweden’s largest hackathon.
Hundreds of applications were submitted, which resulted in a three-day hackathon, meaning intense collaborative tasks between people with widely different competencies, with the aim to develop prototypes around the future’s energy supply. Two of the ideas developed during the hackathon are now in production.
Out of the hundres of applications to participate on the hackathon only a few where invited to join physically - but we wanted to involve the rest too. The rest was invited to join a newly started Facebook-group – membership exclusive for the hackathon applicants – in which they played the role as feedback coaches and judges. The entire hackathon was streamed live in the Facebook-group. After the hackathon, the forum lived on, opened up to the public and is still today a living community where members discuss future energy solutions daily. We have since engaged the community in meetups and digital hackathons. Thus, this project provided Vattenfall with a lasting platform which have outlasted the timeframe for the campaign by years and years.
